How to get a photo we can measure
- Get your house, garage door or front door in the shot. Everything is measured against it — without one there is nothing to measure.
- Stand so the tree and the house are about the same distance from you. A tree in front of a house far behind it reads much bigger than it is.
- Walk back, don't zoom. Get the whole tree in frame, from the ground to the highest branch.
- Use the normal lens, not the 0.5x wide one. Wide lenses bend straight lines, and the tree is usually near the edge where it is worst.
- Hold the phone upright and as level as you can. Tilting up to fit a tall tree squashes it; standing further back fixes that.
- Any modern phone on its normal settings is fine. There is nothing to change and no setting that makes it more accurate.
